What Causes Increased Discharge And A Missed Period After Having Nexplanon Removed And Having Unprotected Sex?

I recently had my Nexplanon removed and had unprotected sex in the following days. I waited two weeks to take a pregnancy test, which came back negative. It has also been a week since my last period. I have noticed an increase in my usual discharge, but it is within the normal range. What could be the reason for these changes?

Hello,

The symptoms that you are experiencing are quite common after Nexplanon (etonogestrel implant) removal, especially if you had unprotected sex soon after.

According to you, your discharge has increased but is normal in color and odor. It is indicative that your ovulation is returning and your cervical glands are producing more mucus.

Other factors affecting your period and causing the symptoms can be stress or fatigue, weight changes or diet shifts, hormone withdrawal (after implant removal). Vitamin D or iron deficiency or thyroid fluctuations can also be a cause. Take a balanced diet, correct your vitamin D, iron and thyroid level.

The missed period and increased discharge are most likely due to your hormones readjusting after Nexplanon removal. Pregnancy is possible but unlikely if your test was negative at the right time. However, you are advised to repeat a home pregnancy test (with first morning urine) if your period doesn’t start in time.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
