What Causes Increased Heartbeat, Anxiety And Pounding Heart While On Antidepressants?

I am taking amitriptyline and buspar. It believe it is the anti depressant, but I have been noticing my heart pounding so much. It gets bad and I can t get it under control. I lay here and I can feel it and it feels as if my heart is too big for my body. I am on the 75mg. I had a anxiety attack yesterday and my heart was racing. I felt as if I couldn t get it under control, having other things on my mind, and I had to lay down, take deep breaths. I got it under control after a while. Is there anything to help with the heart pounding? Maybe lowering the dose? Trying a different one? I ve only been on it for 3 days. I did not take it tonight, but right now, my heart is pounding and I can not go to sleep. Please help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You have not mentioned whether you have a history of cardiac problem. Patients with cardiovascular diseases should take Buspar & Amitriptyline with much caution as they can cause many side effects. Depressed patients are more likely to experience MI(Myocardial infection), severe complications like arrhythmia leading to serious cardiac conditions can occur in patients who have no history of CVD.

Report your symptoms to your treating doctor so that any developing cardiac anomaly/pathology can be detected. Get all required investigations done, get evaluated, get treated. Do not get addicted to the antidepression medications you have been prescribed. Try to stay out of stress, take adequate sleep, switch to healthy lifestyle, enjoy outdoors, eat healthy & do regular exercises.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
