What Causes Infection Post Removal Of Lung In A Lung Cancer Patient?

My friend had lung cancer and the whole lung was removed. He has been in the hospital for the past 4 mths trying to recouperate. He was very bad for the first 2 mths. They had him on. Respirator and in a paralitic coma. He was also on a nova lung for 6 weeks. The last 2 months he has been off it all except the treach reap. He has walked a bit and sat in a chair. He has a lot of secretions . He has weird for 2 hours at a time and it really tired him out. Today he was diagnosed with liver cancer and the Dr says it is inoperable. He also now has an hole and a infection in the area where they removed the lung and so they are going to insert a valve to try and fix that. I don t know what to think???

Thank you for your query.
Sorry that your friend is going through this.

Cancer and it's treatment takes a toll on the body in addition to suppressing the immunity.
Prolonged hospital stay with long standing intravenous catheters also pose threat of infection.

Major surgery with post operative infection along with metastatic cancer has a poor prognosis, in terms of life and its quality.
When a cancer is inoperable, your friend will be offered palliative care (where measures, surgical included, are taken to keep him as comfortable as possible).
Options of chemo or radio therapy should be discussed with the doctors to see if the benefits outweigh the risks.
Some don't tolerate these therapies well & it makes for a poor quality of life.
I'm sorry that this is all the advise I can offer you.

Hope I've been helpful. Please let me know if I've been helpful.
Wish he feels better. Wish you good health as well.
