What Causes Inflamed Septum Along With Running Nose Post Endoscopy?

I had an endoscopy on Monday morning and awoke with my left side septum burning like a severe allergy reaction. I was also given propofol and have read that anesthesiologists may have raised the flow of oxygen thru the cannula. I have had a horrible runny nose since then and had to use Benadryl to slow it down. The burning is getting slowly better a tad each day. I ve also had rhinitis in the rest of my nasal passages. I see there are reports out there that this is becoming more common now that they are using propofol more in endoscopy and colonoscopy. I can understand that the dry oxygen blowing across one spot on the septum could irritate the tar pit of it. Long winded explanation but my question is, even though I know the tissue will recover from that slight insult, is there anything g I could do to make it feel better sooner?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of inflamed septum along with running nose post endoscopy which seems to be due to mainly upper respiratory tract infection. Sometimes infection occur after endoscopy , It can also be due to siple inflammation due to trauma during endoscopy.

I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist once. Doctor may order certain test like nose or throat culture and test , blood test and chest X-ray to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other condition like viral infection. Get pulmonary function tests done as well to check extent of infection and start treatment accordingly.

Doctor may prescribe antibiotics , anti inflammatory and decongestants. You should take cough expectorants as well over the counter anti histamine like benadryl . Use mist humidifiers in room. Do warm saline nasal rinses .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
