What Causes Inflammation In The Mastoid?

2 months ago I was in the hospital with very bad vertigo- an MRI showed inflammation in mastoid. Was treated with steriods for 7 days and felt great. The vertigo is back like it was 2 months ago. Is inflammation in mastoid something that is reoccurring? Will I need to periodically take steriods?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Vertigo is commonly caused by a problem with the way balance works in the inner ear. On the previous occasion, mastoiditis might have been a coincidental finding, which was treated.

This time, it might not be mastoiditis (inflammation of mastoid) which has triggered your vertigo. Also, inflammation of mastoids usually doesn't recur if it has been treated properly on previous occasion.

You need a clinical examination and certain investigations if necessary to know what could be the cause. Kindly consult ENT specialist for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ashakiran S, General & Family Physician
