What Causes Intense Pain In Back Radiating Towards Chest After Having Back Surgeries?

I am a 47 Year old man, 220 lbs. 6 3 . I have relfux problem, but am taking medication for that. The only other issue I have that I know about is back problems. I have had 3 back surgeries since 1998. The past three weeks I have have had a pain in my upper back that seems to be felt all the way to the front of my chest (upper right side) I have no heart symptons to go along with it. The pain stays pretty consistant, but it is more intense when I sneeze, cough, or take a deep breath. I have no sweating, fever, bleeding, etc. Just the pain. I have done some research on this, but I have not had any luck. I plan to call an internist on Monday, but I wonder if I need to see someone sooner. Being a new patient, I may have a bit of wait to get in.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The pain you are experiencing in your upper back that is radiating towards your chest could potentially be related to your previous back surgeries. It is possible that scar tissue has formed and is causing nerve impingement or irritation, which is leading to your symptoms. Alternatively, it could be a musculoskeletal issue or related to your reflux.

Seek medical attention sooner rather than later, especially if the pain is severe or worsening. You may want to consider going to urgent care or the emergency room if you are unable to get an appointment with an internist right away. They can perform tests and imaging to determine the cause of your pain and provide appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
