What Causes Intense Right Breast Pain In An Elderly Person?

I m looking up info for my 85 year old mother. She lives out of state. I phoned her this evening, and she said she is having sharp stabbing pains in her right breast, that feels like a knife stabbing down to her ribs. She s been having this pain for the past couple of days, but has not told her health care worker, nor has she phoned her doctor. What do you think this might be, and what should I advise her to do? my email address is.Thank you for your advice, Brenda Davidson

Hi,

I understand your concern for your loving mom. Since she is complaining of pain over right breast from two days, you should ask her if:

1) she has other symptoms like fever, breathlessness, palpitations, cough, burning sensation.

2) duration of pain and whether it is subsiding on itself or after change in position.

3) presence of swelling in her breast which she can palpate by her fingers flat

4) radiating pain to arms , numbness of chin, cheeks if she doesn't have any other symptoms mentioned and only pain then it could be either muscle pain (myalgia), bony tenderness due to condition called coastal chondritis, or simply heart burn (due to acidity).

In such cases I would have prescribed a patient in clinic an analgesic as well as an antacid. You too can get your mother prescribed from a local doctor. But if she is complaining anything from 1,2,3,4 above then I advise you to get her examined thoroughly by a doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Suhas Chauhan
