What Causes Inter Menstrual Bleeding After Taking Morning After Pill?

Hi, I had sex a month ago today for the first & my partner did use a condom, but I took a morning after pill the next day just in case to stay safe. I noticed that I had some light bleeding the next couple of days & I got my period the following week, which I read was normal. Two weeks after, I started having light bleeding again & I want to know if that s normal or something to worry about. Like is it still because of the pill or could it be my period? Please help me.

Hi,

The morning after pill is an emergency contraceptive pill. After intake of pill, you may experience certain side effects such as nausea, abdominal pain, spotting, low back pain, heaviness in breasts and headache.

The pill would prevent pregnancy by causing breakthrough bleeding like your periods within 5 to 10 days after the intake of the pill.

Since you have got bleeding on the following week after the intake of the pill, it ensures that you haven't conceived.

Generally, side effects experienced would also subside following bleeding. However, since these are hormonal preparations, you may experience certain side effects to continue for a certain amount of time.

Gradually, by the next periods, you should be back to normal. If spotting or inter-menstrual bleeding continues to happen and become bothersome, you need to consult Obstetrician for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
