What Causes Inter Menstrual Vaginal Bleeding?

Good evening. Question: I got my period on the 9thwhich was 3-4 days late (pretty regular). It lasted 6 days. I had unprotected sex (but have the copper t) on the 16th. I now have a period that started on the 21st. I took a test and it was negative. Any info, advice, or reason why this might have happened? Thank you.

Hello,

Bleeding can happen for many reasons. It is important that you have done a pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy. I would recommend you to repeat it in 2-3 days just to make sure you are not pregnant (in case it was too early for the first tests to become positive.)

If the pregnancy test is negative then other conditions might need to be considered. A very common reason for this might be hormonal changes (dysfunctional bleeding) but he is a diagnosis we think of after ruling others like sexually transmitted infection, tumors (of the uterus or cervix), etc.

I would recommend you to see your doctor and have a gynecological examination. Depending on the findings the doctor might decide to order a vaginal ultrasound, a pap smear and take cervical swabs for chlamydia and gonorrhea. If all these come out normal then the doctor might just decide to watch you in the next few weeks or will prescribe some oral contraception to help with the dysfunctional uterine bleeding (hormonal imbalances.)

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
