What Causes Intermittent Chronic Neck Pain?

I have had neck pain on and off for over a year now. x-ray did not show anything. Pain is mostly in back base of head. Left ear has been feeling funny last couple of days. Pain pills and muscle relaxers have not helped much. Really tied of the pain. The pain is not shape kind of dull but constant. Feels like pulled muscle but it has lasted for so long.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of neck pain on and off for over a year, at back of base of head, left year feeling funny for for last couple of days, pain is constant, feels like pulled muscle, X-ray of neck normal.
The most probable cause as per the history that you have provided looks to be due to fibrosis in a pulled muscle due to long history and this fibrosis continues to cause pain.
Hence I would advise you the following:
Consult an Orthopedic Surgeon for clinical evaluation.
MRI of neck, cervical spine and muscles if needed.
May need a local shot of steroid or oral one if there is no diabetes.
Neck support collar helps in some cases.
Proper dose of anti-inflammatory with painkiller properties may help you the most.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
