What Causes Intermittent Heartburn Despite Taking Gelusil?

my friend has infrequent heartburn before, and took gelusil and it become manageable. but now she s experiencing heartburn more frequent, around 3 days per week. should she continue using gelusil with higher dose? or should she take another medication? she s a 36 yo woman btw.

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Gelusil is a liquid form of antacid. Liquid antacids would have proper effect in mild form of heart burns and gives relief only temporarily.
It would be ideal for her to take a course of one of the following medications, which would reduce and regulate her acid production in the stomach.
1. Ranitidine, which belongs to histamine-2 blockers.
2. Pantoprazole, which is a proton pump inhibitor.
She needs to avoid consumption of oily and spicy foods. She can continue to use liquid antacids when necessary.
In case she does not get relief from the above medications, she needs to undergo upper GI endoscopy and get tested for H.pylori infection and get treated for it accordingly.
