What Causes Intermittent Pain In Ankles And High Fever While Having Gout?

My husband, 62 white male 5 8 205 pounds has been having pain in both ankles off and on over the past 3-4 weeks. Today the pain is back and is accompanied by a fever of 100. He has a history of gout attacks but doesn t believe these are gout attacks. He doesn t take allopurinol to prevent them, just the indomethacin needed to stop them when they occur. However indomethacin hasn t worked. He has stopped alcohol, meat, etc.and doesn t typically eat the other foods that cause gout. That I am aware, he s never had fever with an attack. He s been to his Internist and Cardiologist. No issues. Could this be another issue? Who should he see?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have intermittent pain in ankles and high fever while having gout. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like taking certain antidepressants , taking certain blood pressure medications , blood clot of the leg , venous insufficiency , organ failure , particularly in the heart, liver, or kidney . But in your case the pain in ankles is probably due to gout and high fever is due to infection ( viral or bacterial )

I would suggest you to lower your salt consumption , eat healthy and keep your legs elevated while lying down . You need to take plenty of rest in viral infection. Consult general practitioner for proper examination . Doctor may order certain test like complete blood profile ,take history and check vitals along with thumb press test . Doctor may prescribe beta blockers along with diuretics, allopurinol or may refer you to cardiologist for heart problem or nephrologist for kidney problem .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
