What Causes Intermittent Pain In Tail Bone?

Hi, I have been experiencing on and off pain on my tailbone. It s a sharp, shooting pain and it is very painful. If I sit, or even lay wrong it will cause a sharp pain, and it also hurts if I stretch the area too much. It constantly feels like someone is pushing on it also. Is this something I should worry about, or are there any common cures? I have had no injury to the region. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Based on your description, the pain may be due to neuralgia which is nerve related pain.

There are different possible causes such as: (1) vitamin b12 or folate deficiency
(2)diabetes
(3)trauma
(4) liver or kidney disease
(5)side effect of medication
(6)neurological diseases such as stroke or ms
(7)infections eg shingles
(8)idiopathic- cause not known
(9)some hormonal disease eg thyroid disease, some autoimmune disease

Blood tests for diabetes, kidney or liver disease, checking for infection, vitamin b12 or folate level may be needed

I hope this helps
