What Causes Intermittent Pain In The Left Side Of The Face?

For the past 24 hours I have been experiencing intermittent pain on the left side of my face (cheeks, ear, teeth, and lymph node under jawline). It comes and goes but is very painful. Nurse practitioner thinks it is a sinus infection but I am not congested and have minimal nasal discharge. She prescribed antibiotic today. I m concerned it might be something else. Thank you.

Hi Dear,

As per your query you have symptoms of intermittent pain in left side of the face which is mainly due to injury to facial nerve which supplies the whole face area and due to nerve impingement or pressure on facial nerve and it could be due to infected tooth on left side of face.

Need not to worry about it. I would suggest you to visit oral surgeon once and get it examined to rule out nerve compression, neuralgia or other conditions like neuropathy. Till now

- Go for physical therapy of facial muscles.

- Avoid opening mouth extreme wide while jawing.

- Go for conservative treatment if it is related to infected tooth in oral cavity.

Physician may prescribe OPG, neurotropic medication such as nerve supplement , methylcobalamin is effective to improve your symptoms. Oral surgeon may recommend you to neurologist as well if it is related to some other cause.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
