What Causes Intermittent Pain In The Little Finger?

For quite some time now I have experienced intermittent pain in my left little finger. I get a generalised aching sensation between the final joint and finger tip. However the site of the pain seems to be not in the joint itself but on the inside edge of my little finger, near the side of the nail.

Somtimes this is triggered by inadvertently knocking the finger, in which case the pain is more acute than the a dull ache. Sometimes pain comes out of the blue for no apparent reason, perhaps when I am in bed.

I do not get this pain in any other finger. However, it seems to be becoming more frequent and more uncomfortable over recent months.

I haven't been able to find any ideas what this might be, and it seems too minor to go the doctor with. Any ideas?
