What Causes Intermittent Progressive Lower Back Pain Which Hinders Breathing?

This doesn t happen often but when it does it scares me. I can be doing my everyday routine and u will feel a slight pain in my lower back and it seems like its close to my kidneys and the pain progresses until I can find something to lay on and it has to be the opposite side and it gets so bad that I can hardly breath at times. What can this be and what can I do about it?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The muscles of the back as you may know are numerous and fashioned in such a way that you can turn the back in all direction. All these muscles need coordination. Once even a small part is inflamed causing mild pain gets affected, the nearby muscles go into protective spasm to avoid the movement of the already affected muscles. This is a natural protection phenomenon of the body in every one.

Hence, once you get a pain even a small movement triggers the protective spasm, thereby causing more pain. Respiration involves all the muscles of chest, abdomen and back as you must have felt during sneezing the spasm one gets in all back muscles. Hence the respiration causes more pain. This is usually due to fibromyalgia, connected to repeated stress trauma, anxiety and so on.

Hence, I would advise you to consult an orthopedic surgeon to have proper clinical evaluation, examination and investigations if needed. To get started on an appropriate treatment as per the findings. Avoid stress, anxiety and movements of the trunk that instigate or enhance pain. Physiotherapist may help you further for cure. Always keep a painkiller to stop the cycle of pain - spasm- pain - spasm to avoid complications as you have mentioned.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
