What Causes Intermittent Sharp Pain In The Big Toe?

I am a 73 yo female. I have been having intermittent sharp pain in my left big toe, on the top inside. There is no swelling or redness, no bunions or other foot problems. The shooting pains feel like an electrical shock and only lat about 10 -15 seconds. They are extremely painful, but go quickly and may not return for 15 or more minutes, but happen often at all times of the day and night.

Hi,

thank you for providing the brief history of you.

As mentioned by you, your symptoms are related to sharp pain in the big toe there can be two possibilities which can be ruled out and allow us to help you further. Firstly a thorough musculoskeletal assessment is needed.

Further, by doing a urine test we can come to one of the possibility is the increase in uric acid levels leading to pain, This condition is called gouty arthritis. But can be controlled by medication and physical therapy.

The next is, if the urine test is negative then by assessing the symptoms on the clinical platform with special test, we can look ahead for the MRI of the lumbar spine. As your age is 73, there may be a possibility of the nerve getting irritated in the course of its flow or also the nerve root, for which the MRI of the lumbar spine will guide us . This condition is called the lumbar radiculopathy. As , the nerves has dual function of motor and sensory, the sensory is further divided as well. Based on the MRI report the treatment will be guided with medication and physical therapy.

In my clinical practice, this symptoms are common and are controlled faster with the combination of the medication and physical therapy. We get 100% success rate by a combination therapy.

I wish the same from you.
