What Causes Intermittent Slight Pain Under Jaw Bone?

I had a slight pain under one jaw bone. I have had this before in the past, it just goes away, this time it feels like it spread across a larger area, and yesterday it was difficult to open my mouth to take a bite of food. Today is slightly better. The area feels slightly swollen.

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain your symptoms shows that there may be some problem with your wisdom tooth which can either be infected or impacted(partially erupted and which cannot erupt completely due to bony obstruction) OR it may be due to infection and inflammation in your salivary gland.

In case of infection of wisdom tooth it may lead to pain in tooth as well as the jaw on the affected side as well as the pain can radiate to the entire side of the jaw.
It can also lead to swelling due to pus formation and swelling below the jaw can be due to inflammation in the lymph nodes (SUB-MANDIBULAR LYMPH NODES) located just below the lower jaw or mandible as well as swelling can cause difficulty in opening the mouth and pain.

In case of impacted wisdom tooth the gum flap over it may get inflamed due to food debris deposition between gum flap and tooth causing infection and inflammation which leads to pain, swelling and difficulty in opening the mouth and pain below jaw bone can be due to lymph node enlargement due to inflammation.

Other reason for the symptoms you explained can be SALIVARY GLAND INFECTIONS , which in your case can be submandibular salivary gland and can also lead to he following symptoms you explained.

It can also be associated with dryness of mouth , bad breath, pus discharge through glands etc..

I would suggest you to consult an Oral Surgeon or Oral Pathologist to get a clinical evaluation done to find out that what is causing you the problem whether it is a wisdom tooth or a salivary gland..

Treatment can be advised only after knowing the exact cause for the problem.

Hope our query is solved..

Thanks and regards..
