What Causes Intermittent Swelling In The Jaw And Ear Lymph Nodes?

What would cause a 16 year old to have her lymph nodes (that is what we keep getting told) behind her ears and along her jaw swell off and on? Behind her ears are pea-sized and hard and the jaw are larger but softer. They all have recently hardened and cause significan pain and she has been on antibiotics for 1 week

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain as our daughter is diagnosed to have multiple swollen and inflamed lymph nodes that are behind the ear and along the jaw that are tender and hard behind the ear and softer and larger under the jaw can be most probably due to infection in the oropharyngeal region..
Lymph nodes draining those regions can also get infected and become swollen and painful..
As she has recurring symptoms, I would suggest that she should consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and he can confirm the exact cause by getting a Biopsy/FNAC of the lymph nodes done along with blood tests to rule out the exact cause of the problem and treat you accordingly..
In case if infection is confirmed as the cause, you can be advised to take a long course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory painkillers and also do cool compresses over the lymph nodes..
As she is already taking antibiotics, she can also take anti inflammatory painkillers to relieve pain and start doing cool compresses 3 to 4 times a day..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
