What Causes Intermittent Vaginal Bleeding Despite Taking Norethisterone?

I had heavy periods because of uterine fibroids, so I went on the depo provera injection. Within 2 weeks I started having irregular bleeding that lasted about 4 weeks. I was prescribed norethisteron 5mg 3 times a day for 10 days. The bleeding stop after around 2 days. I m bleeding again after 2 days of stopping the norethisteron. Is this my normal period? Will my irregular bleeding continue?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Irregular bleeding can occur as a side effect of depo provera and other hormonal contraceptive. This is not your regular period, it is a side effect of the medication

Women react differently to contraception, some may have no symptoms or side effects whereas others may have the irregular bleeding.

Once the contraceptive is no longer in your body then the bleeding should decrease. You may need to find an alternative measure to help with your fibroids.

I hope this helps
