What Causes Involuntary Spasms In Back And Legs?

I get involuntary spasms in my back and legs at night (mostly) that feel like electrical impulses that jerk my body, but are not painful. They occur every 30 seconds to one minute. Now it's happening in the daytime. I can't sleep and feel miserable. Any ideas?
