Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 62 year old teacher who is twisting my ankles and falling down easily. I am not dizzy. There is always something I have tripped over, teddy bear counter, block, rock, etc. I am wearing sensible shoes but have fractured a fibia, and sprained wrists and ankles these last 2 years. I have been to a podiatrist who has given me steroid shots for the pain and swelling. However, I want to know why I am suddenly having trouble with my ankles. Any ideas on what to do?
An important contributing factor for falls and tripping over is age. This is even worse if you are overweight and not so fit. I would recommend you to keep your weight within the normal limits and try to do exercises, with caution though to not increase the risk for further damage. You also need to have a bone scan to rule out osteoporosis, so you can get an idea if you are at increased risk for fractures or not. I would avoid steroids as much as possible as these may worsen osteoporosis.
Supportive shoes that prevent ankle sprains may be designed for you by a podiatrist or orthopedic doctor specialized in this.
I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
