What Causes Irregular And Spotty Periods?

i am 45 years old and have been experiencing irregularity with my period. I skipped it for two months and then two weeks ago had a very spotty period. No heavy bleading... just spotting. The spotting stopped and 12 days later I am spotting again. Don't know what's happening. Menopause perhaps?
