What Causes Irregular Brown Spotting Along With Cramps?

I'm 22 years old and I last had my period about 2 weeks ago. However, over the past 2-3 days I've been having cramps similar to "period pain", along with mild brownish spotting. I'm not sexually active at the moment and I'm just curious what this could be? I don't recall having this before. Thanks.
