What Causes Irregular Menstrual Periods?

I've just turned 30, but haven't had my period for about 8 months. I've always had irregular periods, but I've also had children, the elder is seven, whilst my youngest is now 5 years old. Although it never comes to anything, I still suffer the pre-menstraul symptoms.

Any ideas?
