What Causes Irregular Menstruation?

My period was 10 days late and when it came it has been unnaturally light except when I urinate it becomes heavier. It is so light I'm not using anything. My partner and I having been trying to become pregnant for last six months so I am not using any protection? But I'm worried why this is happening?
