What Causes Irregular Periods While Taking Oral Steroids?
Hello, I am a little thrown off by my body the past few months. 3 days before my period was scheduled to start I began a 5 day, oral steroid treatment. My period never came. After about 1 1/2 weeks of no period I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. I read online that prednisone can cause missed periods so I thought nothing further of it. However, the following month (technically now) and according to schedule, my period started but was very very light, one tampon, and stopped. I haven t taken another test yet and am trying to find anything online to support what my body is doing. Any help would be greatly appreciated before I call my obgyn. Thanks!
Why steroids were prescribed? As you mentioned, prednisone can cause menstrual irregularities. As you have stopped it already and pregnancy test is negative, let’s hope that the cycles will get back to normal in coming months. We can evaluate further if not regularised in 2-3 months.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
