What Causes Irregular Periods With Black Discharge?

I am 48 yr old female that when I have my period I bleed black also my cycle comes when it wants and ive gone months without having one and for all last yr I would have 2 sometime 3 cycle a month, is this normal menopausal symptoms or is something else happening?
