What Causes Irregular Periods With Spotting In Between?

I am a 59 year old female. I started to have periods less often and stopped completely aprox. 8 years ago. I had a light period 6 weeks. that lasted 2 days then for the next 2 1/2 weeks I was having spotting. It stopped for a week and now I am experiencing a period again. Could this be hormone related?
