What Causes Irregular Periods?

Hi I am 44 years old and the last year I have had very irregular periods. Sometimes I would go three months without a period. I got my period 7 days ago, and suddenly yesterday I am changing a tampon and a pad every hour, its very scary to me. Why would this happen and how do I get it to stop? Any suggestions?
