What Causes Irregular Periods, headache And Nausea After Unsafe Sex?

I have been getting two periods a month for almost a year, this only started after I started having unprotected sex. I have felt pregnant more than once but my period seems to always come...I had unprotected sex 4 times in the past 12 days and I'm starting to cramp and I feel like I'm about to get my period even though I finished my last one 4 days ago! I'm 18 years old and happily married. In the past few days I've had tender, sensitive and veiny breasts, headaches, nausea and increased discharge...due to my strange cycles I have no idea if I've ever been or am pregnant....please help. thankyou, Sarah.

Hello,

You are having irregular periods for almost a year. Bleeding between periods can have a range of causes, including hormonal changes, exercising too much, having a very low or high body weight, injury, or an underlying health condition like anemia, poor general health condition, thyroid problems, etc. After having unprotected sex 4 times in the last 12 days, presently you are having cramps, nausea, headache and veiny breasts.

You have not mentioned if you were taking emergency CP or not. If the blood flow is light, it is called spotting. You are suggested to take rest. Do not stress or panic. Get pregnancy test done with your first morning mid stream urine. If you are pregnant, your levels of hCG should be high enough to detect the pregnancy. You should get clinically examined by a Gynae, get per vaginal check up done to detect bulky uterus.

You may be suggested by your OBGYN to get USG (uterus and fallopian) tubes done to detect the well being of the fetus, gestational age of the fetus (since you have irregular cycles) and the possibility of any ectopic pregnancy. Take food is small amounts multiple times a day since you are having nausea. Stay well hydrated to avoid headaches.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
