What Causes Irritability While On High Blood Pressure Medication?

May certain high blood pressure / arrthymia (sp?) meds cause irritation / mood changes? Patient is taking Xaelto, Sotalol, Minocycline, Losartan / hctz and cartia, combined with alcohol in the evenings (several beers and glasses of wine). Has become irritable and over-reacts to innocuous statements. Should I be contacting his physician with these concerns?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I read your message and understood your problem.

Yes, it is true that hypertension/arrhythmia meds may cause mood changes.

In combination with alcohol, this adverse effect may get stronger.

Also, the patient maybe is stressed lately and the mood changes may not be related to the drugs.

Cartia XT oral may cause nervousness, Losartan, Sotalol and Xarelto may cause anxiety and sleep disorders, Minocycline may cause fast heartbeat, confusion and sleep trouble.
As you may see all these drugs have similar psychological effects: they interact with sleep, cause anxiety, give sleep troubles and mood changes.

My advice is that first, the person must avoid the stress triggers that come from his everyday life and other causes besides drugs. Also, he must reduce the alcohol intake as well.

contact the physician if the mood changes become severe and damage his relationships with other people and family.

Hope this was helpful
