What Causes Irritation In Gums At The Point Of Tobacco Dip?

Hello, I dip Grizzley Wintergreen off and on, and everytime spit the whole dip out I notice my gum lining around where I put the dip, it seems that it is shedding and now is irritated. What might this be? And should I be concerned? I don t dip every second of the day, around 2 dips a day.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

As per your explanation as you place the dip which contains tobacco in a particular location inside mouth and you do it twice everyday there is continuous chemical injury as well frictional injury to the mucosa present inside the mouth in that particular region..

This must have caused atrophy ( thinning due to damage) of the mucosa and there is inflammation in that area leading to ulceration of mucosa which is causing soreness and pain..

You should definitely be concerned about it as this bad habit can lead to mucosal changes which can ultimately lead to Oral cancer if the habit is not withdrawn..

My advise is that you should first of all stop consuming the dip anymore and consult an Oral Pathologist and get evaluated and if it is just atrophic and inflamed mucosa then;
1. You should apply Steroid based ointment like Kenacort to reduce inflammation...
2.To relieve pain you can apply Lignocaine Gel to numb the area..
3.Take a multivitamin tablet for 15 days..
4.Sucking ice pops can help..
5.Avoid hot and spicy food as it will further irritate the mucosa..

In case if the doctor finds any abnormality or if the irritated mucosa does not heal a Biopsy can be taken to confirm the diagnosis..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
