General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Severe itching in the anal region is most commonly due to allergic or fungal rash or worms. The area would need to be assessed by your doctor to see if a rash is present and determine the type of rash. If it is fungal then an anti fungal cream would be needed. These can take 2 to 3 weeks to resolve, for example, Canesten, Nizoral, Ketconazole, Econazole. If it is allergic, a mild steroid cream like Hydrocortisone may be needed. If it is thought to be related to persons then medication such as Albendazole may be needed.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
