What Causes Itching On The Anal Region When Diagnosed With Ascariasis?

Dear Doctor: I was diagnosed with an infection of Ascaris Lumbricoides one month ago, and I followed a treatment with mebendazole in two dosis of seis pills each (two per day). Two weeks afterwards, I still feel an annoying itchiness in my anus area. Is it possible that I am still infected, or is it the icthiness still normal? Should I take a new dosis? Thank you.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The commonest causes of itchiness of the anal area area:
Stool infection.
Dermatitis of the perianal skin.
Infestation with pinworms or threadworms in which the itching is at midnight only.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Get the stool tested for 3 consecutive days.
Get treated with antibiotic, metronidazole and probiotics if there is any evidence of infection in the stool or the skin around anus.
Take multivitamins with Lycopene, trace elements and so on for proper skin recovery. Vitamin D and A help a lot.
Local care by cleaning the area frequently with plain water.
Application of liquid povidone iodine locally.
Cetirizine or so for itching.
All these things will help you for the healing and avoidance of itching.
Avoid warm and humid atmosphere.
Use loose clothes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
