Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have recently, begun to have an itchy nipple and irritation in the labia area. I have type 2 diabetes. I am worried as I appear to have other symptoms I have read from the other writers. Lethergy, Tiredness, to name but two. I take Metformin & Atorvastatin regularly. Should I take a higher or lower dose? What do you advise, please. LA
Lethargy can be caused by many things, but I do agree that we need to make sure your sugar levels are not high since you are a diabetic. However, I would not advise changing the dose of your Metformin (Atorvastatin is an anti-cholesterol medication) unless we have a blood sugar reading to look at. If possible invest in a home glucose monitor, or have a quick finger prick test at a pharmacy or nearby clinic to determine your average level. It should be below 5.6 mmol/L if you have fasted for 6 hours or more, and it should be below 7.8 mmol/L about 2 hours after a meal.
If your blood sugar levels are indeed high, it makes it more likely that the itching at the nipple and irritation at the labia are caused by fungal or yeast infection. A cream like clotrimazole would easily deal with it.
Be careful about changing your diabetic medication according to how you feel. Both high and low sugar levels can cause life threatening problems if left unchecked.
Hope this helps, and stay safe.
Regards, Dr. Teh
