Dear,

Itchy and painful rashes can be caused from different conditions, from a benign allergic reaction (as you assumed and thus used Benadryl) to fungal infections or more severe diseases like psoriasis.
Psoriasis is a chronic condition. From what you described above, it sounds like a plaque psoriasis. It usually spreads simetrically on both limbs preferring extensor surfaces and on your back.
Reverse psoriasis can affect inner thighs.
Fungal infections are another alternative, and they are treated with antifungal ointments and creams.

Benadryl has been known for its side effects like: tiredness, sleepiness etc. Do not worru about this.
I would recommend to take Tylol 500mg as an analgesic and Eczemine (pramoxine topical)1% to relieve pruritis.
Still, I would recommend visiting a Dermatologist to have a detailed and visual evaluation of the condition.

I hope I have helped you understand better your condition.
I wish you health,
Manoku Eni M.D.
