Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son an adult with Autism has a large 3x3 red swollen hard to the touch badly itchy area on his right buttox that looked like some awful bug bite. The Dr poked it with a shot needle trying to see if he could get any pus but he couldn t so he diagnosed it as cellulitis and put him on antibiotics. Does that sound right to you?
A red hard swollen area in the right button does sound like cellulitis or an abscess. I would have actually tried to do an incision and drainage had you come seen me in the office, but an aspiration with a needle is also correct in terms of treatment. I would have also placed him on antibiotics, and I'd also recommend using a warm compress in that area for as long as he can stand it. I'd recommend at least 15 minutes on, 10 minutes off, and repeat as much as possible. This may cause some purulent drainage to come from the area, which is a good thing. If this is getting worse, I'd recommend taking him back to the doctor, or if he has any fevers, chills, nausea or vomiting.
I hope this answers your questions. Please feel free to contact me should you have any further questions.

Hi there, A red hard swollen area in the right button does sound like cellulitis or an abscess. I would have actually tried to do an incision and drainage had you come seen me in the office, but an aspiration with a needle is also correct in terms of treatment. I would have also placed him on antibiotics, and I d also recommend using a warm compress in that area for as long as he can stand it. I d recommend at least 15 minutes on, 10 minutes off, and repeat as much as possible. This may cause some purulent drainage to come from the area, which is a good thing. If this is getting worse, I d recommend taking him back to the doctor, or if he has any fevers, chills, nausea or vomiting. I hope this answers your questions.
