What Causes Itchy Labia Majora During Pregnancy?

Hi there, was wondering I m 37 weeks pregnant and the past 2 weeks have a itch at the top of the labium mojora where it arches . My partner says it s a ingrown hair, yes I do shave every month. Was wondering if it could be something else an should I have it checked?

Hello and thank you for the question.

The most likely explanation for itching of the vulvar skin during pregnancy is related to yeast infections. These are not just vaginal infections and they can affect the outside of the vagina on the vulva as well. Yes, it could be related to shaving and ingrown hairs, but this would be obvious on self examination. You could treat the itching with over-the counter hydrocortisone cream while you wait to discuss this with your OB Provider.

I hope that this helps and good luck!
