Itching may be due to the following conditions:
1) Allergic dermatitis
2) Irritant dermatitis
3) Insect bites
4) Atopic dermatitis
5) Drug induced allergy
6) Photosensitivity
Treatment depends upon the cause of rash. The following are few treatment options:
1) Topical soaks with cool tap water, Burow solution (1:40 dilution), saline (1 tsp/pint) can be soothing
2) Sedating oral antihistamines may help diminish itching. Tab.
Cetirizine or tab.
Benadryl 25mg twice daily can be taken to decrease itching
3) Topical
corticosteroids are the mainstay of treatment, with the strength of the topical corticosteroid appropriate to the body site
4) Topical immunomodulators (TIMs) are approved for atopic dermatitis. They are topical tacrolimus 0.1% ointment,
pimecrolimus are very helpful.
5) Immunosuppressive agents can also be used.
