What Causes Itchy Red Rashes All Over The Face While Treating Huntington S Disease?

My sister is bed ridden, she has huntingtons disease and is not mobile. We have a PSW that comes through the day to help her. Over the past few weeks we noticed she s developed a rash on the race, red swollen patches on her cheeks forehead and neck, it s flakey and at times very itchy. Now her eye is swollen from her eye brow and around the whole socket, puffy. She cannot speak very well so she can t tell us exactly the degree of the symptoms she s feeling but from what we gather she is constantly itchy. We ve been using calamine lotion, aver no anti itch and this brings temporary relief i guess there could be a number of conditions causing this and since she s not mobile we are having a hard time getting her to a dermatologist, never mind a referral. We had a doctor come who does house calls a week ago but he didn t offer much help other than, do a process of elimination to see if it is an allergy. My question is from the description could you recommend a treatment for relief to try?

Hello,

The possibility of allergy was ruled out; which is important. I would suggest you to consider Eczema as a possible cause of the rash. The treatment of peri-orbital eczema (eczema around eyes) requires topical application of mild cortico-steroids. The same is applied to the rest of the body parts with rash. As steroids are prescription only; my advise is to try over the counter urea based fragrance moisturizing lotions like E45 cream, Eucerin, Aveeno to reduce itching and redness. It is essential that the patients skin is kept well moisturized and use only mild soaps in order to minimize drying of skin which can exacerbate itching.
