What Causes Itchy Skin In An Elderly Patient?

My 90 yr old husband is in Veteran s Home and has developed a very itchy skin. A dermatologist & home physician have prescribed creams to be put on 3 times per day. Either the nursing staff forgets or doesn t want to do it . We have not discovered the cause. Any ideas or reccomendations?

Hi.
As per your case history your husband is having senile pruritus.
My treatment advice is -
1. Don't scratch the lesions as it may worsen the condition.
2. Apply an emollient cream like Enmoist cream twice daily on whole body.
3. Take an antihistamine medication like levocetrizine twice daily for itching.
4. Other treatment options are oral steroid like prednisone or betamethasone taken only after consulting a dermatologist.

Thanks.
