What Causes Jaw Ache Upon Swallowing Cold Milk In The Mornings?

My jaw hurts when I drink something cold, but only in the mornings. It usually feels like an ache in the joint of my jaw and goes away in a couple of minutes. It usually occurs when I drink milk in my morning cereal or drink from a bottle of water straight from my refrigerator. Can you help?

TMJ refers to your temporomandibular joints, which are the joints that allow your mouth to open and close. When you have a TMJ disorder, also referred to as TMD, it means that something has caused the joints to function improperly, creating symptoms like jaw and facial pain, trouble moving your jaw and clicking or popping sounds when you open your mouth.

TMJ pain or problems associated with restricted joint opening specifically presents in the morning when you wake up from all night sleep. Jaws become tender and there may be clicking sounds on opening mouth. Cold water or milk aggravate the condition and worsens pain. Another factor associated with jaw ache can be tooth ache aggravated by cold milk.

You need to see your dental health care professional as soon as possible for confirmation of definitive diagnosis.
