What Causes Joint Pain After Taking Prilosec?

I used to take Prilosec, but stopped when I had very bad joint pain in multiple areas. Within days of weaning off the Prilosec, the pain began decreasing. Now, however, I am having incidences of joint pain, accompanied by bone spurs, in my heel and shoulder. Could there be a connection? I am 56 years old. My 83 year old mother has less joint problems than I do. Thank you. Roberta R

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Although it is rare but joint pain can be one of the long standing side effects of Prilosec. Prilosec (Omeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor which is commonly used for the treatment of conditions such as ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and other conditions which are all caused by increased stomach acid. Its common side effects include headache, cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, and mild diarrhea.

On prolonged use it may cause osteoporosis (thinning of the bones), joint pain, intestinal infection like Clostridium difficile associate diarrhea, and vitamin B12 deficiency. Although rare but joint pain can occur in less than 1% of patients taking Prilosec. However, the relationship between joint pain and Prilosec is not clear.

Hope these answer your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
