What Causes Joint Pain, Fever And Chills?

My husband is 56 years old. He gets a pain in different joints and then it will go away. It could be his toe, his elbow, his wrist, etc... and not all at the same time. It will only be one area at a time. It will be extremely painful and then he will get high fever and chills. Then it will go away and he will be prefectly normal again. Sometimes the joint will swell and other times it will be just a little red spot and will just be so very painful. Does this sound like he has Rheumatoid Arthritis. It has been going on for about 8 years. He is otherwise healthy and has never been on any medications of any kind.
