What Causes Knee Pain After Receiving A Cortisone Shot?

I received a cortisone shot in my knee today for the first time. It has been about 6 hours since I left left the doctors office and my knee hurts worse now than it did before I had the shot.. Is this normal? How long does tho post-injection symptoms last? FYI, I am in my late 60 s and do not have any other health problems.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Maybe while giving cortisone injection, they might have put it near the bone or encountered bone. If that was a faulty injection, then it can pain so or may be any tissue damage while giving the injection.

It all can't be decided what caused pain. So, kindly wait for a few hours for the steroid to act. It will take 2 to 3 days to act, and you will definitely get rid of the pain as the steroids act.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Archana
