Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Knee Pain And Calf Muscle Tightness After A Left Knee Surgery?
I am a 62 year old female. I had meniscus removal surgery for 2 tears in my left knee in Feb, 2016. Healed well. Around April I began experiencing Achilles tendinosis. Have had 2 steroid injections, walking boot for 30 days, MRI that only show the tendinosis and on second round of PT that has included sonic waves and steroids with electroids (?). Second round has been exercises and pressure point massage. Still painful. PT therapist found my calf muscle very tight and a large mass she believes in fluid fill on left side of knee starting about midpoint of the knee extending down about 4 inches. Pressure point massage and rolling has softened it a bit. My question is should I continue treatment under the foot doctor or see my orthopedic surgeon for further treatment?
Yes, it may be deep vein thrombosis or so-called DVT although this is not very likely. I means that clot is formed inside the big leg vessel. So you need to do Doppler ultrasound to rule this. Vein thrombosis which is manifested with unilateral swelling of the leg, pain in calf and lividity of the skin.
Some conditions such as pregnancy, obesity and recent surgery may increase the risk of it. This may be serious if blood clot travels to heart and lungs so it should be ruled out as soon as possible and then appropriate treatment can be started. In most cases it include strict resting heparin infusions and aspirin. More invasive procedures are rarely required.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
