Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Knee Pain With History Of Varicose Vein And Meniscal Deterioration?
I have severe pain and tightness in the back of one knee that extends into my calf. It has developed over the past eight months. I now cannot run or jump off that leg. The pain is fairly constant day and night but spikes if I stumble on something on that side and then drag that leg forward abruptly. I m 47. Slightly over weight. I have a huge varicose vein running from my groin to my ankle that requires surgical removal. An MRI showed chondromalacia patella and some deterioration of the meniscus. My question is where is the pain most likely coming from - the vein or the knee joint? I m reluctant to spend $5500 on vein removal if it s not going to stop the pain. Many thanks for your time, Jodi
It is difficult to comment with certainty about the origin of pain with given details. Pain of varicose vein is usually vague and diffuse (less likely to be very localised to a particular point). It increase during day and towards evening (with prolonged standing) and diminishes with laying down position. It will be good idea to try elastic compression stockings for few weeks before surgery- if pain is from varicose veins, this will offer some relief.
If pain is from joint, we expect some restriction in range of motion and point tenderness while examining knee joint. Kindly discuss with your surgeon in detail- he can guide you.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
