What Causes Knee Swelling?

Hello, my knee is swollen and making popping sounds. I have never had knee problems before. You can look at it and tell it is swollen when compared to my other knee. I'm not sure but the reason it is making popping sounds could be related to it being swollen. Is there a way to take the swelling down?
