What Causes Lack Of Dilation In The Eyes Of A Heart Patient?

Hi, my 83 year old mom recently had a cardiac event combined with several TIA s. Doctors say she has a clot at the bottom of her heart and believe she d had a cardiac event before that affected the strength of her bottom lobe, allowing the clot to form. Regarding the TIA s, one of the areas affected was the occipital lobe. She s been having difficulty seeing (was actually blinded for a short time when it happened) and now her eyes will not dilate even with a change in lighting, remaining very tightly closed- only a pinprick to see through. What could cause the lack of dilation? Also, she s at a rehab facility.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It seems she had transient ischemia in midbrain causing injury to brain tissue that is controlling activity of pupillary contraction. Thus keeping it dilated.

Consultation of neurophysician along with cardiac surgeon would be ideal in such a case.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
